Waiting

Time is nothing when you are waiting for the next fix... everything is stretched out, in slow motion, yet it moves by too quickly to follow. Where did the day go? Who know? Who cares, He said he would come, meet me here, but still nothing. A vague understanding that someone walked by, looking at me, I try to smile, force my lips to turn up for a moment and then go back to my endless waiting... My friends talked to me today; I gave the proper response in the proper places, just enough to fool them into thinking I'm interested, and then they were gone again, leaving me. Now I'm here again, alone, the way I like it, where I don't have to pretend to be normal. A car drives by and I think someone shouted something, I am hopeful for a moment, but no, it's not him. Something tells me my back is knotting up, so I stretch, and the light reflects off a puddle. I glance in it, absent-minded, and see a strange face looking back at me... somehow familiar... where have I seen that face? I concentrate harder on anything than I have in a long time to remember when an image comes back to me... it was the look of I imagined in a book... the stone angle from Milkweed, solid, cold, and expressionless, a little cracked on the edges. Strange that I look more like a forgotten statue than myself these days, but the idea passes and I go back to waiting. As soon as he comes, I'll be me again, it's just a matter of time.
