Description

Multnomah Falls, Oregon. When I was in Middle School, I entered a youth photo contest for the beauty of Oregon. I sent in a picture of the South Falls from my other picture, and won third place. First Place was a picture of Mount Hood, and First place was a picture of Multnomah Falls. This Waterfall Here. I live closer to Multnomah Falls than the South Falls, so maybe I should have taken a picture of this one back then... but the waterfall is soooo tall that I couldn't get the whole thing in one shot... so I didn't. I'm better at photography now and I have the right equipment. I took a bazillion pictures of this waterfall, but still, the cookie cutter picture that everyone takes is still the most picturesque, so here it is.

It is such a tourist attraction that by going to this waterfall, I get to see all sides of the world together enjoying one thing. There is the East Indian Wedding Party walking by, and the Chinese family next to you. A guy in a turban or something passes you and a family going into the gift shop is arguing in Russian. You have people who talk with every kind of accent and cameras everywhere. Most are insta pic cameras, but there are also a great many serious photographers there. Right out side the gift shop, a lady has set up a booth, filled with paintings of waterfalls of all types. This is what visiting Multnomah is all about. IT is by far the tallest waterfall in the Columbia River Gorge, but not... in my opinion, the most lovely.

Other Waterfalls there, which get much less attention, and are therefore more remote, include:
1. Laterell Falls, which is my favorite. It is tall and thin like Multnomah, but unlike it, you can go right up next to it and feel the water splashing up at you like rain falling up. You can see the geological wonder of columnar jointing, and the brightest yellow green lichen you'll ever see. The wall of rock that the falls comes down off of bends backward into a cave of sorts and the water free falls onto a rock shaped somewhat like a pyramid.
2. Horsetail falls, which like its name implies, has a shape like a horse tail. You can walk right up to this one too. This waterfall falls along the rock face, hitting half way downa nd bouncing back into the hair to crash in a pool next to it.
3. Bridal Veil Falls. There is a lovely walk attacked to this waterfall, through one of the prettiest parts of our forests here. When you get there, you can see the waterfall, which resembles a veil in shape, from a platform or a rock that juts out over the water.
Other waterfalls include Shepherds Dell, the waterfall back in the Oneonta gorge, and many other little unnamed waterfalls. On top of that, along the gorge you can go to a place called Vista House, where you are on top of a great monolith overlooking the Columbia river from on high. Overall, I can understand why this area is a tourist attraction. ^^
